Council of Colonels Commandant
The RAMC IS authorised to appoint four Colonels Commandant and together they constitute the Council of Colonels Commandant. The Council selects one of its numbers to be Representative Colonel Commandant, who, during their year of tenure is the senior regimental representative of the Corps.
Communication to and from the Council of Colonels Commandant is directed through the Regimental Secretary RAMC at RHQ RAMC.
Selection
The Colonels Commandant are selected by the Military Secretary and appointed by HM The Queen. Military Secretary makes his selection based upon the advice of the Council and endorsed by DGAMS.
Tenure of appointment
Colonels Commandant will have an initial tenure of five years but may be extended if the Corps wishes. The tenure of appointment for the Representative Colonel Commandant will be for one year from 1 Jan – 31 Dec.
Responsibilities
Their main responsibility is to guard Corps traditions and to foster esprit-de-corps and to represent Regimental and Corps interests. These include:
- Advice to DGAMS on any matter raised by him or which the Council feels should be brought to his attention
- Advice to RAMC Unit Commanders on Regimental/Corps matters
- Advice on Regimental organisations, RAMC Charities, RAMC funds and properties
- Maintenance of goodwill and liaison with TA Advisor, Honorary Colonels and TA generally
Ex officio appointments
- Management of RAMC Officers Fund
- Trustee RAMC Charitable Fund
- Trustee AMS Museum
- Trustee Drummond Foundation and RAMC prizegiving
The Council meet routinely four times a year. DGAMS normally addresses the Council at these meetings with an update on Corps matters.
Role of Representative Colonel Commandant
- Provides the channel of communication between the Corps and the Colonel in chief
- Takes precedence within the Corps on specific Corps events
- Visits as many RAMC units worldwide as time and finance permit
- Reports to DGAMS on RAMC management
- Chairs Council meetings
